Lesson 1 Observing Sprouts
The unit starts with a continuation of Lesson 18 in the textbook, following up with the sprouts that they had planted. They will be observing traits, taking notes on Mendel's discoveries, learning the difference between dominant and recessive genes and finding ratios.
Lesson 2 Personal Genes
This lesson ties what they have learned about Mendel and pea plant into human traits. They will learn about heredity and the difference between homozygous and heterozygous gene pairs. They will become familiar with the terms genotype and phenotype and know the difference. The activity will allow them to create a character based on their own traits. During this lesson, there will be an introduction to teh formal lab report for the quarter.
Lesson 3 Pedigree
During this lesson, the students will form a hypothesis for their formal lab reports. They will learn about Pedigrees and how they are used. They will learn how to read pedigree chart and will be reading Queen Victoria’s pedigree. Based on their family survey, they will make their own pedigrees and share their results. They will be starting to form ideas for conclusions of their formal lab report.
Lesson 4 You choose your traits
The lesson will start with a review of the steps of Mitosis, which they have previously learned. They will create a character, map out the alleles, and create genetic code. As a class, we will simulate the process of Meiosis and they will create offspring based on genetic code written by their classmates.
Lesson 5 Genetic Disease Project
This lesson is the first of a three day lesson where they will be putting together a presentation of a genetic disease. They will work in groups in class and with the computer lab to gather their research and come up with an effective presentation of the material.
